The Resilient Recurrent Behavior of Mediterranean Semi-Arid Complex Adaptive Landscapes

چکیده
Growing external pressures from human activities and climate change can exacerbate desertification, compromising the livelihoods of more than 25% world’s population. The dryland mosaic is defined by land covers that do not behave similarly, identification their recurring or irregular changes over time crucial, especially in areas susceptible to become desertified. To this aim, methodological approach research based on integration non-linear data analysis techniques, such as recurrence plots (RPs) quantification (RQA), applied Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), which a functional ecological proxy above ground net primary production. exploits detected vegetation cover gauge predictable (resilient) behavior EVI well its chaoticity semi-arid Mediterranean region (Apulia, Italy). Interestingly, results have shown spatial rendering variables, confirming well-known hot spots soil degradation desertification taking place region, are characterized greater chaoticity, but they also identified new potential candidate sites. As result, susceptibility degradation, measured EVI-RQA approach, help measuring with evident operational benefits for landscape planning. novelty lies spatially explicit resilient less support definition targeted interventions conservation priorities better planning sustainable management drylands.

An analysis of vegetation stripe formation in semi-arid landscapes.
Vegetation stripes ("tiger bush") are a characteristic feature of semi-arid environments. The stripes typically lie along the contours of gentle slopes, and some authors report a gradual uphill migration. A previous mathematical model (Klausmeier, Science, 284:1826, 1999) has shown that this phenomenon can be explained relatively simply by the downhill flow of rainwater coupled with the diffusi...

متن کاملShrub encroachment can reverse desertification in semi-arid Mediterranean grasslands.
The worldwide phenomenon of shrub encroachment in grass-dominated dryland ecosystems is commonly associated with desertification. Studies of the purported desertification effects associated with shrub encroachment are often restricted to relatively few study areas, and document a narrow range of possible impacts upon biota and ecosystem processes. We conducted a study in degraded Mediterranean ...

1 Introduction Accurate quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) is one of the most important elements in meteorological and hydrologic analyses. It has been long recognized, however, that rain gauge networks are usually inadequate because of their limited distribution. During the last decades intense scientific efforts have been devoted to utilize remote sensing information for the estimati...

Hydrological processes and their spatial distribution directly are relevant to climate, topography, geology, and land use in the watershed. Therefore, use of a model whit integrity and high performance for simulating the process in deferent watersheds is very important. In this study was assessment performance of semi-distributed SWAT model in simulating hydrology processes in three watersheds ...
